Sample Dispute Letter to Credit Bureau

Sample Letter to Dispute Credit Report

As many as 1 in 4 consumers have credit report errors, but the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires you to dispute the error with the credit bureau before bringing certain claims.  Whether you completed the Free Credit Review from Florin Legal or opted to review your credit report on your own, what is the next step after finding errors in your credit report?    While there are ways to dispute errors online, below is a sample dispute letter to credit bureau which can be easily customized.    Be sure to provide as much information and supporting documentation as possible (save copies for your records), send the letter by certified mail with return receipt requested, and as always, feel free to call Florin Legal with any questions.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I am writing for two (2) reasons:

1. To dispute certain information in my credit file; and

2. To have you reinvestigate and remove inaccurate information from my Credit Report and prevent its reinsertion. I attached and circled the disputed item from [ INSERT CREDITOR – Account No. __________________ ]. The balance listed is inaccurate [ PROVIDE REASON DEBT IS DISPUTED AND IDENTIFY ANY DOCUMENTATION PROVIDED]. I am requesting that the item be deleted or to correct the balance.

Please investigate and correct my credit report. As part of your investigation, please forward a copy of this letter and the enclosed documents to the furnisher of the disputed accounts. At this time, I am disputing only the account described above, and I do not want you to make my entire credit report available.

After your investigation, please send me a free corrected credit report so that I can review it. If you need more information, please contact me.

Sincerely,
